The origin
What are they and where do they come from? The origin of this plant, from the nightshade family, lies in the high Andes thousands of years ago. The incabes have been given many names over time. It’s not even known how many there are. It’s too much to mention all the well-known names.
There are a few we don’t want to withhold from you. The Physalis peruviana is also known as pineapple cherries. Pok pok and peeled tomato. Peruvian ground cherry or rasbhari. Each name has a story.
For example, it is known that the Cape gooseberry or Physalis is not referring to the southern tip of South Africa. “Cape” is a wrong translation in English. Because the calyx of the Physalis resembles the hood of a monk’s cape, it went wrong somewhere in the translation and became “Cape”.
Externally, the calyx of the still unripe berry resembles the widely known and decorative, also edible, orange lantern plant. They are even related to each other.
What name or story lies behind this berry, we will probably never know for 100%. What we do know is that the growth and bloom of the incaberries is wonderfully beautiful! At first, it’s a small flower that gets a little ball from its heart, which is then wrapped in a delicate calyx. We think “wonderfully beautiful” is still an understatement. Once ripe, they fall off the plant around early August. But incaberries, like tomatoes, can easily continue to ripen on the shelf. Fresh incaberries are quite long-lasting. In a cool place, up to two to three months. In the room, a bit shorter. Over the centuries, incaberries have spread widely. From China to Peru. From Africa to Canada.
The shrub also adorns many gardens and terraces. Not only because of the tasty healthy berries, but also because of their decorative appearance.
Cowardly vegetables in your eating pattern
The nutritional value of incaberries is therefore extremely high! For anyone who likes to eat healthily, they are a valuable addition to their diet. And thanks to the antioxidants polyphenols and carotenoids, everyone with asthma or an allergy can greatly benefit from eating incaberries. These antioxidants have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Superfood & Nutrients
Because gooseberries contain so many nutrients, they are even a superfood. Eating gooseberries regularly will give you extra vitamins. The berries are rich in vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6, and B12. Your resistance can improve and the berries may also have an anti-inflammatory effect on your body. Moreover, the fibers contribute to good digestion and the proteins are very good for vegetarians and athletes. Proteins give you a feeling of fullness and are important for maintaining your muscle tissue.
As for that, the good properties of the eggplants are widely touted. They are healthy. Even have a medicinal effect. Are anti-inflammatory and help improve resistance through the abundant vitamins. Add to that: fibers and proteins and many minerals, and the eggplant is a superfood. Attributing many good properties to the eggplant is justified. Consuming large quantities, and that certainly applies to its concentrated form, in order to stay as healthy as possible, is not justified. The eggplant is and remains a member of the nightshade family and therefore remains a food that should be consumed in responsible proportions. Even if it is a superfood!
Cabbages are filled with or contain bioflavonoids, polyphenols, and carotenoids, and a few more difficult words that are, each on their own or together, health-promoting substances. These substances are credited with benefiting people who have to deal with asthma and other allergies. Or is that so? That remains the question.
Little is known about an allergy to incabes.
Sweet and sour taste
If you like a bit of tanginess, then incabessen are a taste sensation. They taste sweet and sour, with the sourness dominating. Of course, you can use them as an extra in your quark, shake, or salad. But you can also eat them straight from your hand as a snack. If you don’t like them plain, you can also add them to your baked goods. Incabessen taste great in homemade cookies, chocolates, and cakes. And you can easily turn incabessen into a delicious jam thanks to the high presence of pectin. Pectin is essential for making jam!
To vary
The fresh currant is a welcome guest on pastries and cakes. The shape and the almost transparent cup with the beautifully colored berry inside lend themselves excellently to decorating all kinds of treats. A halved currant provides a nice picture, thanks to the many small seeds. In a fruit salad, the berries come into their own. The taste sensation of the sweet-sour currant is special.
In their dried form, incabes can be stored for a long time. They are easily devoured as a healthy snack. Incabes lend themselves exceptionally well in combination with all sorts of other dried fruits and nuts, and in this combination, they are a surprising flavor enhancer in and on cookies and bread dough.
